Thursday Workshop 4-6 pm at the Gardener House:Banging Out The Data: Meaning Making Through Silence & Sound
In this exciting workshop Nilam Ram, co-director of Penn State’s Studio|Lab, a research initiative emerging from the idea that arts and science are complementary, and his team members will present an interactive session exploring the use of music to interpret scientific data. More about Studio Lab: Studio|Lab is a research initiative at Penn State that emerged from the idea that arts and science are complementary. The initiative provides space and opportunity for undergradaute students, graduate students, and faculty to fuse their creative and experimental impulses into ideas in a wide range of fields. In its most literal sense, Studio|Lab is a "studio" for scientists to refine the aesthetic dimensions of their work, and a "laboratory" for artists to test the performance and impact of their work. Brought together, we attempt to contribute to the powerful nexus of creativity and empirical inquiry from which innovation emerges. Project description Data Visualization, Materialization, & Sonification: Data are precise, noisy, and beautiful. Blending our artistic and scientific experimentations, we are exploring different and hopefully new ways of seeing and thinking about our collections and what they represent. Studio|Lab artists and data analysts team up with researchers to transform both raw data and statistical results into pictures, objects, and sounds that communicate known and unknown aspects of human behavior with precision and beauty. Friday Workshop 4-6 pm at 301A Chemistry Building:Engaging in Outreach: An interactive session exploring science communication and design of science outreach projects
This workshop is a hands-on way to learn about effective ways to reach broader audiences in science outreach. This event is co-hosted by the Penn State MRSEC. The workshop will focus on the Outreach being done at Penn State and will conclude with various demonstrations from student volunteers. |
